I made you a warm, toasty, wine-infused beverage to keep you cozy during the holiday season. This pomegranate mulled wine tastes best sipped from holiday mug sitting under a fuzzy blanket by the glow of the fire. My house didn’t come with a fireplace, so I crank the heat up, add a few thermal layers, and press the fireplace app on my iPhone while I sip on my wine. It’s virtually the same thing. Okay, so it’s the very opposite of the same thing, but I pretend.

For me, the definition of comfort is being surrounded by family and friends around the dinner table, telling jokes and sipping wine. That’s where this pomegranate mulled wine comes in. It’s the perfect addition to any holiday table. It’s sweet, fruity, and warm.

I used Gallo Family Vineyards’ Cabernet Sauvignon in this pomegranate mulled wine recipe. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and combines the fruity flavors of blackberry and black current with a subtle hint of oak in the background.

This recipe couldn’t be easier to make. Bring all of the ingredients to a boil in a large saucepan. Turn the heat down to low and simmer for 12 minutes. Strain and serve.

To make the recipe even easier, you can use the help of your slow cooker. All of the ingredients get mixed right in the bowl of the slow cooker and cooked on low until the flavors become warm and spicy, about 3 hours. Strain the mixture and place it back in the slow cooker on warm until you’re ready to serve.

Place a ladle by the pot or slow cooker, and this mulled wine becomes self-serve, eliminating the need for a bartender. Your guests can help themselves to the ladle whenever they need a refill.

Mulled wine is simply wine mixed with mulling spices–cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, star anise, and allspice–and fresh citrus juice. Some folks even add a little brandy–I opted not to use brandy in this recipe. The wine is traditionally of the red variety and served warm. It’s super simple to make, and it goes down easy–maybe even a little too easy.

The steamy fog that floats from the pot will have your mouth watering. The wine smells and tastes like Christmas. Honestly, I almost didn’t want to share.

Pomegranate Mulled Wine

Sweet, fruity wine mulled with warm spices, citrus, and pomegranate.


1 (750ml) bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon

1 cup (8-ounces) pomegranate juice

zest and juice of 1 orange

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/4 cup honey

3 whole star anise

6 whole cloves

3 cinnamon sticks

3 whole allspice


Combine everything in a large saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 12 minutes.

Strain the mixture through a mesh sieve. Keep the wine warm in the slow cooker set to warm.

Alternatively, you can make this recipe in the slow cooker. Add all of the ingredients to the bowl of your slow cooker. Cook on low for 2-3 hours. Strain through a mesh sieve. Keep warm in the slow cooker until you’re ready to serve.
